So, the theory I am hearing over and over is that a gun is needed in the home for protection. Our society has degenerated to being more hate and violence than love and compassion. And especially when you have children you want to protect them. We lose children to accidents in the home every year. Accidental poisoning, dog bites, bullying, molestation, and abuse.

I believe that most people who have a gun say they are “for protection.” I understand the need to try and keep the violence away. In a home with children, the gun or guns are locked up in a closet or in a drawer in the nightstand. Heaven help us there are none loaded and under a pillow. Some people have multiple guns in the home. Some are revolvers and some are assault guns. I am not sure what they are expecting to arrive at their home.

Real life scenario: you are asleep and hear a noise and quietly get up. You hear another small noise and you unlock your gun and load it. In the dark, you tiptoe down a hallway and you can barely make out an outline. Someone is in the house! You shoot. There is a thud and the person’s body falls to the floor and you flip on the lights and see you have shot your husband in the shoulder. But at least he isn’t dead. He was away on business and got home before he was expected and didn’t want to bother you. Now the police are arriving and an ambulance and you are trying to explain to the kids and the police.

Here is another one. You and your husband are in bed watching tv. All is quiet in the house, suddenly you hear the sound of glass breaking. Well, maybe that is what it is. Fear grips you and your husband gets the guns and loads it. He hears a creak and goes down the stairs. You hear yelling and a gun fire. You are terrified but call 911. It turns out that a kid broke into your home. You find yourself looking at your husband who has just shot and killed a sixteen year old who was looking for money for beer. Did he commit a crime? He sure did. Did he deserve to be dead? He sure didn’t. Even though you might live in a state where the husband wouldn’t be prosecuted you both have to live with the fact that you killed another human being. Yes, we have the right to protect what is ours. Is it more important than a life? More important than a child created to walk this earth and has Divine energy within him or her?

There have always been people who have been the scum of the earth. There always will be.We will never end all of the hatred and violence. Do we ignore it?” I think not. I think we have a well regulated militia (police) who are paid to protect us. How about if we took all of the money spent on the purchase and use of guns and ammo and distributed it to cities to hire more police or pay them what they should be earning?

Again, looking to keep the conversation going. I want to hear from everyone. This is one of the most difficult questions we face right now as a country.

Thank you Ms. Barbara for this post. We must save our children.

Mental illness is growing in US society, with the easy access to guns such people will increasingly walk the murder-suicide route. Gun massacres will increase until someone wakes up and addresses it.

Another excellent post. Share, share and share some more people.

  4. We have to do something, I don’t know what it is though. With our love affair with guns and violence growing and being fed by those who profit most. With fear running rampant through the streets, what do we do?

When you say to someone, by 2015 gun deaths will outstrip vehicular deaths their only answer is ….. it doesn’t count. You are including accidents and suicides in your calculation.

All I can say is Dead is Dead. What is wrong with this picture.

What about the other scenario: you hear a noise, you get your gun, loaded and ready, turns out it is an adult criminal. Thing is, they expected you to be home because they’ve been casing your house, and probably assumed, depending on the state you live in, that you have a gun. You shoot, but it turns out your aims not that great in the dark, and the criminal also has a gun. He shoots back. He kills you. Then kills everyone else in the house so there are no witnesses. I’ve heard that one plenty of times.

Then there’s this myth that having assault rifles will somehow protect people from a government with trillions of dollars worth of armaments at their disposal. The 2nd Amendment is last practical and more of a fringe excuse these days.

    • Very good ideas. How about the money going to an alarm system? As to the myth, there have always been people who look at the government as the greatest danger on earth. Do we really want irrational thinking people owning assault guns. I realize there is no easy answer. That is why conversations like these have been helpful. To understand the second amendment you really need to read exactly what the Founding Fathers meant and think about what life here was like. It was uncivilized and wild. There were different dangers everywhere than the ones we experience now. Does that make a difference? We must all contemplate that thought. Thank you for your thought provoking comment. Blessings, Barbara

I think the founders, beyond just being in survival mode, were worried about tyranny. What I don’t think they accounted for was the rate at which technology develops. I’m not so worried about the government; I’ve long been of the opinion that most governments of the world are too incompetent to maintain a dictatorship, even if they should be successful in installing one. I think the answer is easier than we’d like to believe, but the implications of the answer calls for drastic changes to our own mentalities; to society as a whole. At least for the “me” inclined American, that’s asking way too much and involves much too much work, dedication, and foresight.

Of course, I may be a bit cynical. The right and far right are surging all over the world, and I can see the fringe ideas and beliefs taking precedence over reason.

      • Well said. That is what we must prevent. Not conservatives having opinions but them forcing everyone to have the same opinions and living the same way.

Very well stated on your part.

      • Maybe but I am happy for intellectual conversation on all subjects. So thank you.

Toy guns should be banned. No person under 21 should be allowed to handle guns in private capacity unless having undergone military training. Issuing of ownership license should be very strictly controlled. Good posts by you.

    • I agree. Guns are not toys and it is important children learn the difference. When there is a violent home and you add guns into the mix with all of the verbal, emotional and physical abuse. Tragedy is the only possible ending.
