The end of a family

The end of a family

My blog today was inspired because of a news story I heard on cable. After everything we have been through lately with mass shootings, I feel the need to talk about Domestic Violence. This is a case where a kid was angry at his mother. These are his words. He shot his mother. His nine year old brother entered and the teen picked up the dead mother’s head and showed it to the nine year old and then shot him. He proceeded to also shoot and kill two other younger siblings. He then gathered up his guns and planned on going to the local Walmart and shooting it up.

This type and extent of anger is a mental health issue and it is also a question of  the issue of guns in the home. If you look at the images I posted you will find so many children holding and perhaps learning to shoot a gun. Our children can’t spell, do math, or read but parents are making sure they learn how to handle a gun. This seems like a case of mixed up priorities.

If you talk to seasoned soldiers, the ones who have actually killed another human being. I believe it would shake people and kids up. I was a nurse in the day, and it is a significant experience to watch the end of a person’s life. Yes, there are bad people in the world. Do you want or do you want your children to experience taking the life of another human being.  To eliminate that bit of Divinity that exists within the worst of criminals. I always wonder what made a person choose to be evil. There are very real reasons and most stem from a childhood where the person didn’t experience love, acceptance, support or ethical teachings.

So we need to continue our conversation about guns. It isn’t a yes or no choice. There are many perspectives. I invite you all to share your feelings and any expertise in the area. I invite all comments. I invite all opinions and perspectives and perhaps we can get people thinking and then discussing with their own family and friends. May each soul that returns to The One be supported and loved as they transition to the next level of existence. Many blessings to all.

Much thanks to idealistrebel for this thoughtful post! Whether you go to the original post to discuss, or talk to someone local-the important thing is starting the conversation. No one of us has all the answers, but until we can live in a country, and a world where we never have to worry about little kids being shot, or picking up a gun and shooting someone-the conversation should not end.
Violence is a way of thinking and a way of life-it did not start with guns, they just make it easier. But people picking intractable positions and defending them is NOT solving the real problem of violence in our society.
Derrick Jensen makes a very good case in A Language Older Than Words for the idea that colonized society, modern society etc is based on violence, it runs on violence like cars run on gas. It needs violence to work and it breeds violence at every level from domestic abuse to drone strikes and nuclear war.
The good news is, this is not the only culture humans ever created and it is not some inevitable result or end state of history. As the Battle for Seattle protesters pointed out “A Better World IS Possible”.
No one can impose that better world from outside of anyone else tho-it has to come from within ALL of us, we have to choose to change, and to co create that better world instead of recreating the world of violence and power over with each choice we personally make.

  4. People often ask me if I keep a gun for protection given my history, the answer is always the same; NO.

When asked why I always explain, I looked in the mirror and knew I would not be able to live with myself if I took the life of another human being.

All this talk about guns reminds me of the documentary “Bowling for Columbine.” Have you watched that yet? It was a real eye opener for me. Apparently banks gave out free guns and rifles to people for opening a new account with them. And all they had to do was sign a form declaring they didn’t have mental issues.

There is nothing wrong with children pretending to play with imaginary guns, I did this as a child. It is a different story allowing children access to real guns, usually through careless carers.

I recall walking through Toys R Us with my son when he was small, I guess about 25 years ago. I entire isle was filled with toy guns, knives, other weapons. I’d skip the isle entirely. – Thanks for your post.

Here in Jamaica we have a very high murder rate and almost all gun-related. We have a problem with imported illegal guns, mainly from the US. But realize that in the US it is a horribly complicated issue. We must, must at all times think of our children and young adults when considering the issues… Thanks so much by the way for following my blog! Please visit again soon…

  10. Where is the FS Viewer?

  11. I use pocket money also. I love it. I also use MPG and it allows me to record my gas purchases and maintenance transactions into pocket money right from MPG.
