IOTD is image of the day, a concept I came up with. I teach visual meditative therapy – or in easy terms – a mini mental holiday. For some people it is very difficult for them to get their image right. I post an image a day for people to use in their mini mental vacay. Some are serious, some are silly, and some are just beautiful!”

So far a lot of people l have enjoyed this when I’ve done it on

Opening my heart

Opening my heart

I have been listening to Pema Chodrun’s book about compassion and she inspired this Zentagle and multi-page layout. I have been playing with copies of it so you will probably see it again in a new iteration. We are coming up to my favorite week of the year. I love Thanksgiving and we celebrate Game Day the Friday after. We invite friends and family to come and play, eat, and talk all day. My heart is opening up wider and wider. Come on in.

Here is the open heart layout. I also really like how the page with all the circles turned out. This is the third picture book I have used in a row and I’m ready for the texture and blocks of text of a chapter book. How could I resist a book about Thanksgiving for my November gratitude journal?

Colleen's avatarLife in the City with a Future

sunsetIf you must look for beauty outside yourself… be prepared to find it warms your heart.

smileyfaceIf your life is a tangled mess … joy is just on the other side waiting to greet you.

wildflowerlakenIf you think that life is boring and routine…seek out the diverse and the wild.

monarchgranbyIf you’re staring at your feet in shame or despair… take a moment to notice the beauty just there.

bumblebeepollenIf your job is too busy … rest a moment in nature’s embrace.

cattailRemember that each thought is a seed that will drift on the wind landing where it may … may all thoughts be seeds of love and joy and peace.

Why would we need any other kind?

Love,

Pachamama

Notes To Ponder's avatarnotestoponder

In EcuadorMother Nature is called Pachamama, and she now has constitutional rights. This story is far from new, in 2008 65% of Ecuador’s population voted in favour of re-writing their constitution to give legal rights to Pachamama. Her new bill of rights was written by a group from Pennsylvania called the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF).

CELDF wrote –  “nature or Pachamama, where life is reproduced and exists, has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution.”

Ecuador’s president Raphael Correa has dubbed his countries new approach “living well” The remarkable thing to ponder in all of this; Ecuador is one of the smallest and poorest countries in South America. Oil production is perhaps the life blood of the economy, and they are sitting on millions of barrels of oil. The oil just happens…

Feminist Friday: How Valuable is the Bechdel Test?

Sabina's avatarVictim to Charm

Think about the last movie you saw. Were there two or more female characters? Did they talk to each other about something besides men?

The Bechdel test, created by Alison Bechdel, examines female roles in movies by asking three questions:

  • Are there two or more women in the film?
  • Do they talk to each other?
  • Is their conversation about something other than a man?

alison bechdel, dykes to watch out for From Alison Bechdel’s comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” (1985).

The test seems simple—women talk to each other about things besides men all the time in real life—yet a surprisingly high number of movies fail to represent this basic activity.

5540832_origThe test is so basic because it’s a standard that should be easy to pass. The fact that so many movies fail to achieve one, two, or all three of the test’s clauses highlights the rampant misogyny of the film industry. If a movie can’t…
