Guest Blog: STEAM Heat

Hi, All!  It’s IdealisticRebel’s sister, and I’m hijacking her blog for the day (with permission, of course).

Tomorrow, I will be participating in a panel hosted by the American Association of University Woman (AAUW) in what is being called a STEAM Conference which encourages young women, still in Middle School and High School, to enter traditionally male fields.

You may have heard of STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Math.  AAUW recognizes that there is a growing need for women to enter the realms of digital Art as well, so STEM becomes STEAM, and I will be doing my part to encourage the young attendees to break out of traditionally female roles and join the ranks of the STEAM Women.

What’re my credentials?  I’ve worked in male-dominated fields for 22 years — first in Architecture, as a Computer-Aided Drafter/Designer, and now as a Technical Support Analyst for a major software company in North East Ohio.  More than that, my first attempt at a college degree was in Engineering.  Currently, I hold 3 degrees — Associates’ in both Architectural CADD and Computer Networking, and a Bachelor’s in Network Security Systems.

What’s my message?  It’s not the traditional one that so many women have heard all their lives:”math is hard” and “technology is for boys”.

Math can be hard, but it can also be fun — and you really do use it everyday (try balancing your checkbook without it)!  Technology wasn’t made for boys, it was made for people and the last time I looked, Women And Girls Are People, Too (I know, this comes a shock to some people, but it’s a fact of life, nonetheless).

Is it easy being “the only chick in class”, as I was for most of my last two degrees?  Not always, but that shouldn’t stop the next generation.  Because if enough girls and young women enter STEAM fields, they won’t be the only female in class; they’ll be part of the norm, no longer a sidebar, but the main article, as it were.

That’s not enough reason to do it, of course; just to increase the numbers isn’t a reason why anyone should go into any field.  The reason should come from you:

Because Science means that when you look up at night, you don’t just see “diamonds in the sky”, you see balls of hot gas, billions upon billions of light years away, with worlds swirling around them, and the fact that the light of those little diamonds left their home stars before the Earth was born blows your mind, and you want to know more.

hubble1

Because Technology means that you know the difference between a bit and a byte and you want to make Apps that make people’s lives easier.

Because Engineering means that when you see an electric car go by on the road and your first thought isn’t that it looks cool, or even how much money it costs to run, your first thought is what makes it go?

Because Art means that you play video games, alone or online, and you find yourself sketching the characters and want to make those characters you sketch come alive.

Because Math  makes sense to you, because numbers never lie and they make the world a more orderly place.

But mostly, just because you are YOU and you deserve to do what you love, no matter what that is, and no matter what other people think is ‘gender appropriate’.

Because you’re a person, too, and people get to make their own choices.

Make your choice, whatever it is, traditional or not.  Just be sure the choice you make is yours.

Why Does She Stay?

I worked for years in Domestic Violence, and I have heard many, many stories of abuse.  I think that educating people about Domestic Violence, and that there IS help and that people DO care about their safety, and the safety of their children is the most important thing we can do to stop the violence.  There is away out, and people around you will help find it.
I have heard this story in many variations from hundreds of women.  There is nothing like hearing a victim’s story, and that she safely got out, to give a victim of abuse the courage to begin breaking their own silence and to begin planning their own way out.

Today We Thank Mother Earth

“Lord, the air smells good today, straight from the mysteries

within the inner courts of God.

A grace like new clothes thrown

across the garden, free medicine for everybody.

The trees in their prayer, the birds in praise,

the first blue violets kneeling.

Whatever came from Being is caught up in being,

drunkenly forgetting the way back.”

May we all remember to thank Mother Earth for what we have been given. May we ask forgiveness for what we have destroyed. May we do restitution to our planet to undo what we have destroyed. May our words, prayers and actions make a difference.

Family TIme Under the Sea

This weekend, my Sister, Son, Daughter-in-law and Grandson went the Cleveland Aquarium.

We had a wonderful time, watching the sea creatures (and a couple of land creatures) and remembering the importance of other species in our world.

Watching my grandson, and all the other children (and grown-ups) learning new things, exploring a new world was both exhilarating and oddly peaceful, as was walking under sharks and other fish through a huge plexiglass tube running through the aquarium.  It was amazing to see sharks and barracuda going right over your head.  It was also dizzying and little weird, but one of the most incredible experiences.

Here’s a small view of what we experienced.

Enjoy!

Everyday Struggles

All people face struggles everyday, from the simple to the complicated, no matter who we are, or what our lifestyle is, and we all try to face our own burdens with dignity. This is a call to do what you can to assist the people struggling around you. You can be someone’s hero or heroine.

This video by Shannon Curtis shares some of what we all face.

What are you facing and how can sharing your own difficulty help other people face theirs?  It’s something to think about. Everytime you assist another human being, you are bringing peace to the world.

Namaste,

Barbara

This beautiful music video from Shannon Curtis highlights some of the struggles many of us face every single day. You don’t need the sound to read the words on the screen, but if you can turn it up, it’s pretty powerful.

Life is Important

A few days ago, I posted a piece about ISIS deliberately impregnated a nine year old girl. This little girl experienced rape and trauma to her little body. Today, ISIS is surrounding another Iraqi city. I want to thank you all for your comments on my initial post. Please add your prayers to your comments.

There are many people in the world who have lost their respect for human life. All life is created by Divinity. All life, human or otherwise, is precious and does not deserve ill-treatment. Impregnating a woman or a girl is power and control. It is humiliating the female and wanting her family to shun her. This is a way to destroy the life of the female and to devastate her family. It also raises a new generation that would be damaged emotionally by the circumstances of their lives and families.

Now that ISIS is surrounding another Iraqi city, the city may collapse. If it does, there are thousands of lives at risk. Men and women captured and tortured and possibly killed as so many others have been. Women and girls raped or gang raped. Why? Because they are different, they call their God a different name.

Yet, down through history, the different names of a Divine Being have separated human beings from each other. These Divine Names are the reason for wars, atrocities, rapes, and mass murders. Hundreds of humans have died throughout the centuries because civilizations and countries have at times lost their respect for human life. WWII is one example. Millions of people were killed because of who they were but also because of who and what they weren’t.

For people to rape and impregnate children, there is a disconnect between their minds and their emotions. Many are psychopaths and feel no emotion. Not just people in ISIS but even some American citizens. The elderly have no use or meaning to these people and neither do women of any age. A world where life has no meaning is a terrifying and devastating place for us to be in.

Life is important. It has meaning that many don’t want to acknowledge. The meaning of life carries us to kindness, compassion, love and joy. These attributes carry us to peace. A lack of these attributes carries us to war. What is war good for?  NOTHING.

Sunday’s Child

Another in my series of child prodigies, this little 9 year old boy from Bolivia shows that handicaps (in this case, blindness) need not hold anyone back.

Given enough love, encouragement and support, children can overcome huge obstacles.

ISIS Impregnates 9 Year Old

ISIS impregnates 9-year-old girl

A 9-year-old girl is pregnant after being raped by ISIS savages in Iraq, a report said.

“The abuse she has suffered left her mentally and physically traumatized,” said Yousif Daoud, a Canadian-based aid worker who recently returned from the region. “This girl is so young she could die if she delivers a baby. Even cesarean section is dangerous.”

At least 10 different men with the Islamic State were said to have sexually assaulted the child, the Toronto Star reported.

“Most of them were front-line fighters or suicide bombers who are given girls as a reward,” Daoud explained. “She was in very bad shape.”

The young girl was one of over 200 Yazidi women and children to be released this week after spending eight months captive in the hands of the extremists, according to the Canadian newspaper.

Daoud claimed that many of the women and young girls who were set free by ISIS would be shamed when reunited with their families, due to suspicions that they had been defiled by the militants.

“If they are married, their husbands won’t take them back if they are pregnant,” he said. “And it’s clear that the babies will never be accepted.”

“I don’t know what the future would be for their babies,” Daoud added. “The girls and women don’t want them. They have suffered so much they just want to forget.”

The 9-year-old girl has been transported by a Kurdish aid group to a medical charity in Germany, according to the Toronto Star.

She will be looked after there until her baby arrives.

The Worst Punishment

This blog is another one of my attempts to get conversation going (civil) and sharing ideas about a horrible crime. I am talking about the Boston Marathon Bomber. A young nineteen year old supposedly drawn into a heinous plot by his older brother to blow up innocent people and children.

He has been found guilty of thirty counts. The jury deliberated for eleven hours. I think the jury came to the right decision. Next week, the sentencing phase will begin. It is expected to last as long as the trial did. I have heard commenters say that if he doesn’t receive the death penalty, he will be put in a western maximum prison where bombers are kept. He would be in his tiny cell twenty three hours every day until he dies of natural causes.

I have been thinking about the death penalty and I know that all of you will not agree with me. That is what I want: the exchange of ideas, thoughts and emotions. Death will bring the end of his life. Will it bring the dead back to life? No. Will extremities reform at the moment he takes his last breath? No. But death will bring an end to what is going on inside in his head. He sat quiet and unresponsive during the trial. I am sure his attorney told him to sit and not react. At nineteen, he is only just beginning to be the man he was destined to be.

Though stoic, he did write he wanted to be a martyr. I don’t think we should give him that martyrdom. Martyrs can inspire others to follow in his/her steps.

The prison where they put the bombers is in Florence, California.  If sent there, the Boston Marathon Bomber will be alone for twenty three hours a day. No contact with other humans.  This boy is nineteen. Each year he faces twenty three hours a day to think. To remember what he did. To remember what was said against him in the trial. To fall asleep, and have his nightmares populated by the faces of those he killed or maimed. Twenty three hours is a long time to sit alone with nothing to do. A month of twenty three hours a day is a long time.

A year of twenty three hours is quite long. To live through all of these hours and to know there are fifty to seventy more years to survive. Each minute filled with sixty seconds, each hour filled with sixty minutes. Twenty three hours alone. Granting him the death penalty, instead of a life sentence without possibly of parole and death seems like we would be protecting him from having to live with what he has done.

What do you, my readers, think? How do you feel about this? I do believe he will suffer more with a life long stay in jail that in a death that would end his suffering and his penalty. He wants to die. He wants to be a martyr and have  a platform.  Is it right to give him what he wants?
