Watch Men Learn What Feminism Means And Then Realize Something Obvious
Curator: Adam Mordecai (from Upworthy.com)
In 1986, Marie Shear wrote: “Feminism is the radical notion that women are people.” I’ve been a feminist unknowingly since I was born and knowingly for the last eight years or so. It wasn’t until a feminist friend pointed out the definition to me that I realized I actually was one.
According to Webster’s dictionary, Feminism is “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.” If you think women and men are humans and believe that they should be treated equally, congratulations, you are a feminist.
To prove this, Upworthy hit the streets of New Orleans and asked several men if they believe in equal rights for women. Unsurprisingly, they all said yes.
Initially, when we asked them if they were feminists, one-third said yes and two-thirds no. But once we explained what feminism actually is, the majority of them agreed that they just might be feminists too.
It’s really not that hard to be a feminist.
Yep, I’m a dude. I’m also a feminist (and a humanist too, though they are different things.) What does that mean? It means I think men and women should have equal rights and equal opportunity. What doesn’t it mean? It doesn’t mean I think women should have more rights than men. It doesn’t mean I think men don’t struggle too, in different ways. It doesn’t mean that I want to force everyone else to think or act a certain way. It doesn’t mean I want to create a feminist army riding velociraptors feasting upon the men who disagree with me.
It just means I think women and men are humans who should have equal rights and opportunities. If you disagree with that, then I can’t help you. You can be a feminist and want good things for men. In fact, I don’t know any feminists who want men to suffer at the expense of women. Because as I mentioned three times already, feminism is about equal rights and opportunity for everyone, regardless of gender or skin tone or age or ability or anything else.
Are you a feminist?

The world calls it FGM or Female Genital Mutilation. I prefer to call it exactly what it is: a violation of a woman’s human rights. Alice Walker has written a book about it and I read it about twenty years ago while I was doing some work for the UN. I was so horrified, I threw up. But I read every word of the truth and went on to do some research.
It is Black History month and I decided that I wanted to write about this because it is happening around the world to women of color. It is an old tribal custom that is supposed to make the little girls marriageable. It has been handed down from generation to generation for centuries.
I am going to describe this procedure because we have to know what women around the world are suffering. And as people are immigrating here, they are bringing this barbaric ritual with them and so it is happening here and in European countries.
When girls begin to get their menses, their mothers take them to the tribal woman who performs this cruel procedure on little girls so a man will want to marry them. Their mothers hold them down as there is no anesthesia used. The cutting and sewing are done while the girl screams and cries. It is terribly painful.
Now, the reason for this barbaric act is that they cut the labia or sew it up so there is only a small spot for urination. If she has sex, it would tear her apart. Sometimes, the clitorus is removed so that she will never feel any sexual pleasure. If there is no pleasure, then the girl/woman will not stray because sex is painful and causes bleeding as well as pain.
At first I was very upset with the mothers, then I realized it was the way they all grew up and they didn’t know any better. They didn’t know that the majority of women do not have this experience. My horror was so deep it was a physical reaction to the words.
Whether you are male or female I realize that most of you would react in horror. But the men brought up with this ritual feel that they own the woman and since women are inferior to men, it is a way to keep her from wandering into another man’s bed. We all know how women seduce men and that the men are innocent.
Men are so solidly behind this ritual that some of them have their wives sewn shut before going away on business to ensure her fidelity. Some check their wives’ genitals everyday to make sure she is intact. Childbirth is even more painful than usual because of the mutilation these girls/women go through. Some die from infection, some try to run away. It is nothing but pure torture and misogyny.
It is a serious problem and it isn’t disappearing. Some girls/women just don’t get married so they won’t have to have it done. Others are tortured and killed. Humankind is a dysfunctional species living in a dysfunctional world. Men and women need to know what is happening so we can get the practice stopped.

Since the governments are trying to curb this atrocity, families are now taking girls farther away from home.

This little girl has survived the procedure.

Tears are still streaming down her face.

This is the procedure being performed.

The Dalai Lama is shunned because he is the spiritual and political head of Tibet. The Chinese invaded in the fifties and stole the country from these very peaceful Buddhists. The world watched and did nothing. Hugs, Barbara
There is a new art medium that helps artists to focus and to get into the zone. It is a way of combining meditation and creativity together and it opens you up to increase your artistic flow.
“Keep creating and it will change your life.” —Beckah Krahula
This medium is called Zentangle and it totally combines your creativity and your meditation. There are not a lot of supplies needed. The process of creating a Zentangle teaches us to become comfortable letting your instincts out and following them where they would lead you. It also teaches you to see your work from every angle. You learn to acknowledge all the possibilities in your work. Not having a planned goal can take the stiffness or rigidness out of your art. Once you begin to tangle, you can just let go.
They say to do small projects. They call them tiles and they should not be any bigger than a tile. The official and real Zentangles are the size of a ceramic tiles. These are the rules, but since I don’t do well with rules, I do small ones and large ones. Whatever I feel like doing.
Tiepolo tiles are the official and original Zentangle tiles. You can tell if they are real because there is a red block on the back of the tile with a Zentangle inside of it. It is also recommended that you use a heavy paper. Many artists use a black tile for the contrast it provides. They also recommend a sketch book to practice every day. I like doing mine in a sketch book. Tangles can also be used in sketches to increase the beauty of the scene.
Because this is a meditative art form it is good to practice it every day. Many artists will do a Zentangle to sort of warm up. To get into the right place and let the creative energy just flow out. Then you can go on to your regular medium completely focused and ready to just let go. Some people use tangles as a form of self-expression or to unwind at the end of a stressful day.
I have found that I like to do them to prepare for working on a painting and simply as a meditative exercise. It calms and de-stresses. The sheer fun of just moving your arm on the paper and freely allowing your emotions to come to the surface is therapeutic.
I find that this form of art leads to inner peace, compassion and a positive outlook. What a wonderful way to change the structure of your day. And I can still meditate and I can feel love and joy just radiate from my soul.
Allow your creativity to lead you farther and farther down the path of your life’s journey. I bet you will see a person smiling at you from the mirror more often.

Namaste and happy tangling.
Well said, my friend. Hugs, Barbara

The two women ask passersby to evaluate the feminist leanings of popular figures such as Kim Kardashian, and then turn the questions toward themselves. They were surprised at the answers they received when they pushed further and asked, “do we look like feminists?”
Check out their hilarious new video below, question your assumptions, and pass it on!

Some days, we all need some humor. I have over a foot of snow here. So you get humor!!!
This is still my Monday Morning mental journey. Yesterday during the Super Bowl, Always ran a shortened version of this Video as a Commercial. It is so good, and so pertinent to the War on Women, which starts with the War on Girls, that I thought that women and men deserved to be able to see it, experience it and think about it for the rest of their lives.
Being a female is not being less than. It is being Equal.
My compliments to the people who put this fantastic video together, and the brilliance of running it at the Super Bowl, when the testosterone concentration in America is perhaps at its highest.
Let’s make a #LikeAGirl mean only “be the best you that you can be”.
Good morning, dear readers. I find myself thinking about those I miss. The people who are no longer there are the greatest loss of getting older. It is the anniversary of the passing of an old friend. John Lennon was in my dreams last night. I don’t know why and the plot isn’t clear, but it got me thinking of the rest of the Beatles. That led me to George Harrison, and this interview George gave to VHI shows the authentic, real George Harrison. It, in my opinion, is a brilliant video.

This is a quiet homage to Whitney Houston and a prayer for her daughter, Bobbi Christine, now in a medically-induced coma. May she come out of this with new strength and determination, and a clear knowing of how much her mother loved her.
